How to Store Cement Properly as per IS 4082 (Very Easy Guide)

Cement is one of the most important materials used in construction. It helps in making concrete, plaster, mortar and many other things. Because cement reacts very fast with moisture, we must store it very carefully. If we do not store it properly, it becomes hard, forms lumps, and becomes useless.

The Indian Standard IS 4082:1996 gives clear rules on how to store cement at a construction site. In this blog, I will explain these rules in very simple language so that even a 10th-class student can understand them easily.

1. Always Keep Cement in a Dry and Safe Room

Cement bags should never be kept in an open area. They must be stored in a dry, leakproof room.
The room should have:

  • No leakage

  • Very few windows

  • Doors that close properly

This is important because even a small amount of moisture in the air can spoil the cement.

2. Keep Cement Bags Away From the Floor

Cement bags should not touch the ground.
According to IS 4082:

  • Keep bags on wooden planks,

  • Maintain 150–200 mm gap from the floor,

  • The floor should be made of lean concrete or dry bricks.

This is done to protect cement from ground moisture.

3. Leave Space From the Walls

You should keep at least 600 mm space between the wall and the cement stack.
This helps in:

  • Air circulation

  • Easy inspection

  • Avoiding moisture from walls

4. Stack Cement Bags Properly

Cement bags should be arranged neatly.
The rules say:

  • Maximum height: 10 bags

  • Maximum width: 3 meters

  • Bags should be kept close together

  • Follow FIFO (First In First Out), meaning use old cement first

  • Put a label with date of receipt on each stack

This method prevents bags from falling and keeps the cement fresh.

5. Protect Cement in Monsoon Season

During rainy season, cement needs extra care.
You must:

  • Cover the entire stack with a thick polythene sheet

  • Make sure the sheet is not torn or damaged

This protects the bags from rainwater and moisture in the air.

6. Store Different Types of Bags Separately

IS 4082 says that paper bags, gunny bags, and plastic bags should not be mixed.
Keep each type in a different stack.

7. Storage in Drums or Silos

If cement comes in drums, keep them on level ground and close the lid tightly after use.
If cement comes in silos, keep the silos near the concrete batching plant, and make sure there is proper access for cleaning or replacement.
