Slump cone test as per is code 1199 : 2018 - part 2

1.    What Is Slump Cone Test

Slump cone test is a simple site test carried out to determine the workability and consistency of fresh concrete.
Each sample shall be Remixed before carrying out the test.

2.      Why do I need a Slump cone test.

Concrete slump test measure to  fresh  concrete workability and consistency. Sometimes concrete too wet or too dry which can be unfavourable for the specific work.

3.      Sampling for Slump Test.                                            As per IS CODE 1199-Part-1

Fresh concrete sample shall be collected from a moving stream during discharge from :
Sample shall be tested immediately.

1. Mixer

2. Transit mixer

3. Pump Line

4. Boom Pressure

4.      Tolerance of Tamping Rod.                                      As per IS CODE 1199-Part-2 Clause. 4.3.2.2

The tamping rod shall be checked periodically to ensure compliance

             d)  Thickness of mould at least  1.6 MM
             e) Mould shall be metallic, non-absorbent, with smooth internal surface and free from dents.

6.

6.   Filling slump cone                                             As per IS CODE 1199-Part-2 Clause. 4.3.3

Slump cone shall be filled in 3 equal layers.
Using the steel tamping rod to tamp the concrete.
1.  Bottom layer
2.  Middle layer
3.  Top layer
Each layer shall be tamped 25 times using tamping rod.
Mould lift vertically In 5 second      ± 2 second
Finish the test within 180 second ( 3 Minutes )
Record the Slump value Measured to the nearest  5MM

7.      Test Result                                                            As per IS CODE 1199-Part-2 Clause. 4.3.4

Only True slump meets acceptance criteria as per IS 1199:2018

True Slump

Valid Result

The concrete settles evenly.

Shear slump

Invalid Test

There is a side slip  of concrete

Collapse slump

Invalid Test

The concrete break down completely.

Note :- Specified slump in mix design  and Slump value as per Project specifications.
Recommended ranges as per IS 456.
In case of shear or collapse slump, a fresh sample shall be taken and test repeated.

8.      8.      WORKABILITY OF CONCRETE                                      As per IS CODE 456  Clause no.7.1  Page-17
